Tun Tavern in Philadelphia is recognized as the birthplace of the Marines, where Captain Samuel Nicholas began recruiting hard men for an even harder job.
The Continental Congress wanted fighters who could handle shipboard chaos and shore assaults, and in that era, it was common for volunteers to show up with their own trusted weapons.
